Power of Perseverance

Good afternoon super Olympian runners; this is your Road Runners club of Woodbury weekly run tip. Today is a wonderful day to run. The weather showed some evidence that we are finally in the spring season. I just want to take a moment to share some exciting achievements made by six runners who just started training. I have the privilege to train 27 runners to achieve the broad street run. Out of the 27 there are six runners who came into this program with less then three miles under their feet. This group of six definitely needs some recognition because today they went “9 miles”!!!

Today was our nine mile run held at the loop on Kelly drive? Eight weeks ago these six runners where struggling to accomplish one mile. Today they finished nine miles with a little more left in their tanks. This is a reflection of the power of perseverance. One step at a time one mile at a time and soon the body can achieve any distance it wants. In three weeks the six runners will accomplish their first race (The Broad Street Run) knowing that only 11 weeks ago they struggled at one mile.

Each week the training format increased by one mile starting from three miles and then finally ending at 10 miles. The best way to train for a race is to take it one small part at a time. For example if you want to run 10 miles, choose a schedule of 11 to 12 weeksto accomplish this. Then set one day (usually Sunday) as your long run day. Each week increase the distance on Sunday by one mile. By week 10 or 11, you should be ready toaccomplish the whole ten miles.

The next time you ask someone to go run and they respond “ahhh well I cant do that,” (unless they are handicapped of course) mention this inspiring story and get them out to the RRCW Fun Run!

Happy Running!
